Here is one piece of advice about hot tubs: leave the hot tub wiring to the experts. Even if you are a do it yourself type who has fixed the household plumbing, maybe changed a few lights here and there, the wiring for hot tubs is a completely different matter. It may be easy to place the hot tub in the chosen location in your home, set up the filter, get the pump to start working and even start the water flowing into the tub. You can make decisions based on the aesthetics of the hot tub and can even undertake the maintenance procedure needed for the upkeep of the tub. But for your safety and well-being, the wiring for the hot tub should be done by an electrician or a spa technician.
Hot Tub Wiring - What You Should Know BEFORE Buying Your Hot Tub
Even before you pay for that brand new hot tub, ask the dealer or manufacturer if there are special electrical requirements that are needed. When you pick a location inside or outside your home for the hot tub, you need to check if it is near enough to an electrical outlet that can provide adequate energy for the hot tub.
You should also analyze the electrical service that you currently have to determine if the wires need to be replaced or if the sockets need to be repaired. It is better to iron out all the creases before you get your hot tub in place. You can check with the electrician to do an initial inspection beforehand to determine if any safety precautions need to be taken this early on. The electrician will also be responsible for ensuring that the wiring for the hot tub is compliant with the National Electric Code which prescribes certain power requirements and regulations for hot tubs.
Make a list of all the tools that you will need for your hot tub installation and if you need to make an additional purchase, it will be cheaper for you to source this yourself than to rely on the spa technician to get them for you. As you start using your hot tub, you may encounter some wiring related problems. Instead of proceeding to conduct some troubleshooting, call the dealer, especially if the hot tub is still under warranty so they can fix it for you.
Two of the stipulations that are included in the National Electric Code for hot tubs include the emergency shut off and flexible connections. The emergency shut off should be easily reachable by users of the hot tub and placed not farther than five feet away from it. On the other hand, flexible connections pertain to the cord and plug connections that are allowed for usage for hot tub wiring.
